We Are All One Race

Charles Darwin’s famous book’s full title in the first edition was “The Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life.” In addition to his theory of evolution, Darwin postulated that the races of humans developed separately and that some races were superior and other races were inferior. Thus Darwin gave rise to the pseudo-scientific or false scientific basis for races. Darwin has been proven wrong by the human genome project.

Vivian Chou is a Ph.D. in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences program at Harvard Medical School. Her conclusion based on the human genome is that:

“The popular classifications of race are based chiefly on skin color, with other relevant features including height, eyes, and hair. Though these physical differences may appear, on a superficial level, to be very dramatic, they are determined by only a minute portion of the genome: we as a species have been estimated to share 99.9% of our DNA with each other. The few differences that do exist reflect differences in environments and external factors, not core biology.

Importantly, the evolution of skin color occurred independently and did not influence other traits such as mental abilities and behavior. In fact, science has yet to find evidence that there are genetic differences in intelligence between populations. Ultimately, while there certainly are some biological differences between different populations, these differences are few and superficial. The traits that we do share are far more profound.”

The Human Genome Project was an ambitious project spanning 13 years in which researchers sequenced and mapped all the genes- together known as the genome- of Homo sapiens. Therefore, science shows that there is only one race — the human race. Also, the differences between us are only 0.1% of our DNA. This minor difference is what makes us each unique individuals and not exact clones of each other.

I believe that God created all people from one blood, the blood of Adam. And that in Adam we are all brothers and sisters created in the image of God and that by faith in Jesus Christ we are brothers and sisters in Christ. Jesus commands us to love God and to love one another and to forgive one another. We should teach our students to love, not hate each other and to forgive each other and not to seek revenge. If we can be anything we want to be, we should be kind.

I Corinthians 13:5 – …love keeps no record of wrongs…

Ezekiel 18:20 – …the child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child…

Chief Justice Roberts wrote: “The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”
