Delaware Supply Chain Issues

The ongoing supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, and inflation put pressure on the economy, driving up producer costs and consumer prices. During the height of the pandemic, millions of Americans relied on boosted unemployment benefits provided by federal stimulus packages. Now, as the stimulus packages expired, many people in the labor force continue to stay at home and are still collecting unemployment benefits. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that 4.3 million of Americans quit their job in August alone!

The supply chain issues bring about labor shortages, and labor shortages bring about further supply chain issues.  This is a vicious cycle.  The cost of goods and services, as well as the shipping rate, are expected to rise through the duration of 2022.  Delaware’s small businesses and restaurants have become affected by these issues.

Last week, Delaware Live reported on the impact of supply chain issues on our restaurant businesses here in Delaware. This is a worthwhile read: https://delawarelive.com/restaurants-hardest-hit-by-supply-chain-issues-delaware-experts-say/

Of note are a few key issues from the article:

  • Restaurants suffered under Governor Carney’s lockdown measures
  • The true cost of inflation which severely impacts the restaurant businesses is the rising cost of food
    • Crabmeat jumps from $29 to $51 a pound
    • Lobster $32-$50 a pound
    • Bread 32% increase
    • Labor 10-14% increase in wages
  • Supply chain issues
    • Aluminum cans are limited in quantity impacting distribution
    • Help, we can’t find enough employees thus restricting hours of operation
  • Bob Older, the President of the Small Business Association is quoted as saying that he believed every attempt to mitigate the problems through extended unemployment benefits, stimulus checks, and expanded child-tax credits has just made the labor shortages worse. Older also states that small businesses, those employing under 100 people, are voiceless compared to large companies.
  • And remember, the Biden Regime isn’t done spending money!!

These are self-inflicted wounds. In response to COVID, Democratic Party policies quarantined the healthy, closed our schools, and shuttered our small businesses.  This led to our current economic devastation, all in an over-reaction to a disease with a 99% survival rate. Democratic Party policies have led to high inflation and severe unprecedented supply chain issues. In addition, Biden’s war on oil has led to a dramatic increase in the cost of energy. Conversely, Republican Party policies have led to a stronger recovery from the lockdown policies of the Democrats. Both Politico and Fox Business featured stories showing the strongest recovery from these lockdowns are occurring in Republican-led states. Obviously, here in Delaware, we suffer under Democratic Party policies. We featured opinion pieces (A Time for Choosing and Joe Biden’s Vision of America, Venezuela) that discussed the negative impact of Democratic Party policies on both the nation and Delaware.
